In 2015, Vancouver Island’s two principal cities proclaimed May 12 as official ME and Fibromyalgia awareness days. Many thanks to volunteers and councillors for helping to get the word out. Click on the links below to view the proclamations.
If you’d like your municipality to proclaim May 12 as ME/FM Awareness Day, contact a local councillor. Feel free to use the following text for the proclamation:
WHEREAS Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and Fibromyalgia (FM) affect 3% of Canada’s population with symptoms including chronic pain, extreme physical exhaustion, immune dysfunction, and cognitive impairment; and
WHEREAS ME and FM greatly reduce quality of life, can cause total disability, and cost the Canadian economy more than $6 billion annually; and
WHEREAS the causes of these diseases are still unknown and there are no effective treatments for them, so more research is urgently needed; and
WHEREAS living with these diseases can lead to social isolation, so it is important for sufferers and their families, friends, and caregivers to know that they are not alone.
NOW, THEREFORE I do hereby proclaim the day of May 12 as
“MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS AND FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS DAY”
